Drywall Repair: What Homeowners Need to Know

From small nail holes to larger damage from water or impact, drywall repair is a common need in most homes. Learn when to DIY and when to call a professional.

Small Holes (Under 1 Inch)

Nail holes and small dings can be filled with spackling compound, sanded smooth, and painted. This is a straightforward DIY project most homeowners can handle.

Medium Holes (1–6 Inches)

Larger holes require a patch. You can buy drywall patch kits at any hardware store. The key is feathering the joint compound out wide enough that the repair blends seamlessly with the surrounding wall.

Large Holes and Water Damage

Large holes or water-damaged drywall should be handled by a professional. Water damage in particular can hide mold and structural issues that need to be addressed before patching.

Matching Texture

The hardest part of drywall repair is matching the existing wall texture. This is where most DIY repairs fall short — the patch is visible because the texture doesn't match. Professional painters have the tools and experience to match virtually any texture.
